Silk, Satin, Georgette and Hualuo: What the Names Tell You
Silk names a fiber; satin describes a weave. Georgette and hualuo describe fabric types, so these terms answer different questions. To choose a scarf, read the fiber composition first, then compare the surface, transparency and drape of the finished fabric.
Read fiber and fabric separately
A listing that says 100% mulberry silk identifies composition. A satin description tells you about the surface and construction. The China National Silk Museum distinguishes luo, or gauze, from duan, or satin and satin damask, in its overview of Chinese silk types. These are fabric categories, not interchangeable names for all silk.
Compare the finished surface
Our Midnight Blue Bird scarf has a smooth satin finish. The Light Blue Silk Georgette square has a semi-sheer finish whose appearance changes with folds and the color underneath.
Hualuo is a patterned gauze fabric. In this collection, Terracotta Hualuo is described as a 19 momme silk square. Plant-Dyed Hualuo has plant-dyed Xiangyunsha finishing, confirmed by the seller's supplier information. The two products should be read individually rather than assumed to have identical finishing.
Look for the information you need
Composition, dimensions and a worn photo often tell you more than a broad word such as luxury. If a fabric construction is not stated on a product page, do not infer it from sheen alone. Printed gold-toned detail also does not establish that a scarf contains metallic thread or real gold.

Is satin always silk? No. Satin names a weave; check the stated fiber composition.
Are all silk scarves equally transparent? No. Fabric construction, color and layering affect the appearance. Compare product-specific descriptions and photos.
Does 19 momme describe a quality grade? It is a fabric-weight specification, not a certification or an overall quality grade. Consider the finish, drape and intended use as well.
